1969 Carney played for the Santa Clara Little League team which made it to the finals of the Little League World Series. In the final game of the World Series on August 2), Carney's team was defeated 2-0 by the team from Taipei City, Taiwan. (Carney is one of less than a dozen men who have played in both the Little League World Series and the MLB World Series.)
1973-1975 Carney attended Wilcox High School in Santa Clara, California. Graduated in June 1975. (The baseball field there is named after him now.)

1983 Carney's brother Joe appeared in 12 Padres games in '83. That was the end of his major league career.

1992 October - Carney announced his retirement after game 6 of the World Series.
1997-98 Carney worked as bench coach for the St Louis Cardinals.
2007 At the age of 50 Carney made a successful return to professional baseball as the hitting coach for triple-A Colorado Springs in the Rockies' organization. His team, the Sky Sox, ranked third in the Pacific Coast League with a .292 batting average and fifth with a .353 on-base percentage. In November the San Francisco Giants announced they have hired Carney to serve as a hitting instructor. "I am greatly looking forward to the honor of becoming a member of the Giants family," Lansford said. "As a Bay Area native who was born in San Jose and raised in Santa Clara, I have been a life-long Giants fan."
